Recent research shows how popular playlist listening has become to modern music fans; outpacing the album for the first time ever. And with the proliferation of digital music platforms, it’s easier than ever to compose your own playlists.

But what happens when you don’t feel like or don’t have time to compose your own mix? Chances are you use a radio service of some sort. FM radio is great because knowledgable DJs spin the latest music and keep it fresh. Digital radio is great because you can take it with you on the go and don’t have to sit through audio ads and talking that interrupt your listening.

The problem, however, with most terrestrial FM radio is audio ads and spoken interruptions. Also, depending where you live, there might just not be any good FM radio nearby. The problem with most digital radio is that it gives too narrow a slice of music, is often repetitive, and doesn’t necessarily expose other genres and artists. There’s no human curation to tailor the experience. Digital radio delivers music it already knows you like and doesn’t push boundaries. It’s like musical comfort food.

It’s at this intersection that we created Stationdose. Though the algorithm is still in its infancy, we can already look at a user’s local weather conditions, day of the week, and time of day to deliver a playlist that’s more likely to match the energy level of the moment. Tracks are chosen from ever-evolving, expert-curated catalogs separated by genre.

In order to cater to both hardcore fans and more casual listeners alike, we created a familiarity slider. Slide left and playlists are filled with more popular music. Slide right and playlists are filled with b-side gems and lesser known artists.

With only two taps a user gets a mix with a vibe that matches the moment. For good measure we feature static playlists that explore genres and artists, as well as a hand-selected daily rotating playlist that will often mix genres and eras; a difficult task for algorithms.

Stationdose isn’t for every moment of listening, but when a user wants to tap and go, there’s no easier, more seamless way to listen.

If you’re interested in checking it out, it’s available free on iOS for Spotify Premium users. Happy listening.
