Love, Sex, and Music Production

So as I look back on the successful artist relationships I have formed compared to the ones that didn’t work…. I realized something. In order for a “musical marriage” to thrive, the required ingredients are the same as those needed for a loving or romantic relationship to be fruitful. These ingredients include…

The "Metagration" of the Web...and what it can mean for artists..

It only make sense that with the floods of content floating out there waiting to be surfed, there would be some better tools put in place for finding and organizing the content that interests you the most.

So how is content found today? I think it would be safe to assume that Google is the number 1 way people currently find content on the web that they’re looking for specifically. It works great. It will show me any content or any websites that even contain the keywords I’m looking for, but when it comes to using the search results for a specific function, Google isn’t always so specific. In other words, there’s many things Google can’t/doesn’t do.

Luck?

I’ve had a number of people say things to me like, “well that’s all great, but you’ve got to be lucky” and “sadly, it’s all about who you know”. Well, I think those statements are right… except that there’s nothing sad about it. You need to be lucky and you need to know people. The good news is that you create your own luck, and if you are who you need to become and you do the things you need to do, then you’ll meet all the people you need to know.

Have you ever known someone who always seemed to get in trouble and could never seem to get out of their own way? No matter how hard they seemed to try they seemed to be the victim of circumstances conspiring against them? Well…

File Sharing 3.0

Today I ran across an article called “File sharing: Piracy or activism?” by Open Attitude blogger Andrew Currie. This is a legitimate question that we as a community have the responsibility and duty to decide on. The answer however may not be as unreachable as we think. In fact, I will reveal it very soon. The solution comes with a slight shift in the perspective of conventional thinking. The method is to seek out any problems that arise given the circumstances, in order to determine what a successful design should include. The problem here is simple and I think can be best explained by one of the comments that was in response to that blog article, by Reddit user PhastPhoodPhool: “When you start likening manufactured objects and digitally reproduced data as objects of value, then you have already presented an ethical dilemma. How can you charge full price for something that is free to reproduce? That is why it is so easy to download. It only represents a loss if you otherwise would have realistically paid for whatever you’re downloading. The whole side of the copyright holders is totally impartial to the facts.”

Sharing

A thought occured to me just now and maybe it’s worthy of being shared so here goes…..

These days I very rarely part with cash for music due to being able to legally stream music to listen to.  It’s been like this for a few years now.  Previous to that I’d buy half a dozen CDs every month or two.  So I figure I’ve put about £5k into the record industry over the years - that’s more than I’ve paid for my TV licence since I’ve been paying it.

I’ve also spent tens of thousands of hours producing music in my lifetime, some of which has been recorded and - other people tell me - is actually enjoyable to listen to.

At gigs I used to offer a swap to other artists on the bill if I enjoyed there music - your CD for mine - and it was always accepted with a big smile and good vibes.

There are loads of people like me - talented, determined, creative, original - making good music and making it available for free on the ‘net.  I figure that this is a fair return for my effort.

These days I’m trying to be content with making music that I want to hear then popping it on the ‘net for free.  I can’t afford to buy music anymore and I can’t sell recorded music easily so I figure that my reward for my efforts is everyone else’s music for free.

That’s my contribution and I can look forward to keeping the £5k I might have spent on CDs for other things in the coming decade.

If you’re curious then click here for a link to the last project I completed and maybe swap a link to your free music in the comments.

The point of this post is not to get you all to listen to my music - honestly - it’s to see what you think about this idea that if you are a musician then the minimum reward you can expect for putting your music out there is access to lots of free music for you to listen to.  It takes a massive investment in time to record music that is truly engaging and worthy of attention because we’re all massively over-exposed to and saturated by music, but maybe if you look things from this perspective your efforts are rewarded in kind by having easy access to everyone else’s efforts.

Sorry if I’ve not been very articulate - I try, but hope you get the gist of this post anyway.

Taylor Swift BMI Lawsuit

So as I’m sure you have heard, BMI has filed a lawsuit against a small Idaho sports bar for neglecting to pay licenses for playing songs specifically by major label contractee Taylor Swift. It never fails to amaze me how licensing companies like BMI, ASCAP and SEASAC don’t hesitate at a chance to sue considerably smaller establishments for lack of “proper licenses.” What is more shocking though, is the fact that though Taylor Swift is named as a plaintiff in the suit, she technically will have no say in the proceedings and probably won’t even be present for any hearings. BMI will control all aspects of this case, seeing as they pay substantially for full-time teams of impenetrable lawyers, just for such an occasion. It is also worth noting that WHEN BMI either wins the suit in court or as a result of a settlement, Taylor Swift will directly receive no monies whatsoever

CSI Music Industry, Part 1: The Crime Scene

Frankly, I am happy the record industry is in this current state. We are about to wrest control away from 3 decades of corporate record thugs. We are now unencumbered to discover more new artists, and discover more ways to connect and share artists and music than ever before. Today there are more business models for an artist to reach an audience than ever before and the opportunity to make a living as a performer is emerging. The record business is dead, but the record business still tries to lurch forward with their 30-year old business model.

Artists' and the Economic Recession

I recently came across a tweet from one of my favorite marketing experts, Suzanne Lainson of Brands Plus Music. It was a report on the selected findings of a survey conducted by Leveraging Investments in Creativity. The survey sought to understand artists’ financial circumstances more than a year into the recession, their strategies for adaptation, and their needs and concerns at this time. I found most of the results to be surprisingly familiar to the ones I’ve heard piece meal from my clients last year, however this is the first time I had seen such a complete report from a cross section of people like you - struggling artists clamoring for ways to survive and become more profitable in 2010.

How To Get Your Music On Rock Band

For a limited time I will be accepting applications for artists who want to try out the Rock Band Network creation tool on my dime. We’ll get into pricing shortly along with a high level step by step introduction to the platform. I’m guessing all in, the selected artist will save about $150 to $200 in software and subscription charges and gain the ability to make money using the system. Kinda cool right? Well lets get started.

Free Music Doesn't Mean Devalued Music

The concept of zero took ages for societies to recognize—let alone understand—and it’s been a stumbling block in economics recently, especially for the music industry. Those who think about economics in terms of scarcity get upset when abundance pushes price down towards zero (as we’ve seen with digital audio files), as if the economic equation was broken (even though it isn’t).

But artists and other creators hit a different stumbling block than economists: zero is a problem because they feel like their art is worthless.

They aren’t hung up on scarcity. They’re hung up on “devaluation.”

Rage Against the Machine Breaks the 'Status Quo' it's what the Nex Gen Music Biz Needs

Todays success of Rage Against the Machine beating X factors Joe and preventing the usual Simon Cowell controlled Christmas No 1 here in the UK is a welcome change for many. We need it! Change can be a good thing for all sorts of reasons. So I’m all up for change, how about you? But embracing change is what can make the real difference especially for those involved in making the music.
