Indie Artist Music Services? Where, What, and WHY!

For those of you who have already embraced the DIY duties of the new music industry, the concept of music hosting sites for Indie Artists is not an unfamiliar one.

I’m sure you’ve heard about dozens of NEXT big site you NEED to be on, music marketing wiz bang widgets, and yet another indie music service you need to be using…

The PROBLEM most people have is WHICH ones to be on, and then of course why and how does it benefit you… And i mean… In the real world. I get how it theoretically works.

Well there are tons of options, and exactly WHY you should be on a site certainly depends on a strategy for doing so, where that reason would be spelled out and clear.

Over the next six months (maybe longer) i will be exploring this issue a little bit deeper, to see if i can actually pull anything tangible out of all this, and try to come up with some reasons other than, “Well we are supposed to… Aren’t we?” Or, these vague stats like “2 million people” come to our site every month… And i might get 75 plays out of that.

I’ve got a solid understanding of all of the big ones and i understand both their function and their benefits, but i’m trying to get some real data and get a bit more practical about what’s realistic and WHERE we should be spending our time in this respect, and WHY.

Also, i’m not talking about sales and distribution services such as CD baby, or Tunecore… There is no question that you should be using one of those. Derek Sivers is the man, so i recommend CD Baby.

I’m talking about all the other services… Hosting, Radio, Sharing, Other Services, etc.

Again, i get all the high level theory here, but i want to find solid concrete reasons based on personal research and collective experience, rather than some companies data set.

Once i feel that there is sufficient information i will be putting together a list of all the Indie Music Services that secure a seat, along with a reason for why and how they fit into one piece of your online puzzle.

If you are indie music service provider i am certainly open to non-biased stats that you can provide me, and i encourage the conversation.

There may be multiple lists based on categories or however it breaks down, and i’m not sure how it’s all going to turn out, but i’m going to be trying to make some sense out of some of these questions and try to deliver some simple relevant tips and strategies to make your life a bit easier, and do what i can to help keep you continue to spend your time wisely.
