Sound engineers spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on their equipment. This quality equipment is a hot target for thieves and burglars if you don’t have adequate security. Whether you have a professional or home sound studio, make sure it’s protected from dishonest people. Here are some tips to get you started.

What To Look For

Before you invest money and trust in a security system ask yourself some questions about what you want in your security. First off, do you want cameras or an alert system? Long-range cameras are overkill for a sound studio, unless you plan to monitor the perimeter of your property. Camera resolution is also a consideration. The difference between 420p and 1080p is the difference between an illegible and legible license plate. If you plan on outdoor surveillance you need weatherproof, low-temperature cameras. Once you decide on cameras, you need a digital recording device (DVR). This is tricky, as DVRs fill up with data quickly, especially if your cameras shoot in 1080p. Determine how many gigs of data you’ll need with a DVR data calculator.

While many security systems come with free installation, if you buy an independent alert system or individual security cameras, set up can be as simple as the placement of door and window tabs, or mounted cameras to ceiling tiles or wood beams. Some security cameras out there still require networks of cords, wireless cameras are much easier and just as reliable. Determine the level of security you want before you invest in a pricey security system.

IP Cameras

Have eyes on your studio no matter where you are with IP wireless security cameras. With no monthly fees, Lorex IP cameras are a great option. Connect these cameras through an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi and always know who is in your studio via the Ping app. View this app anywhere for live video footage of whatever your IP cameras can see. These IP cameras shoot in 720p, comparable to other top-of-the-line IP cameras on the market. They have two lenses designed for daylight and one for low-light conditions; an above-average night vision range of 30 feet. Two-way audio provides you with easy communication with anyone within view of the cameras, as well. Perhaps, the best feature of these cameras are their simplicity of setup. All you need is a power supply and Wi-Fi before live video is streamed to your mobile device.

Window & Door Sensors

Korner Security is a simple system for access points in your building. Korner provides you with tabs that fit in the corner of doorways and windows, a receiver that plugs into your modem, and an app that alerts you via smartphone if anything goes amiss. Through the Korner app you can invite friends to Your Circle, a trusted community you specify during setup. When someone gains access through a Korner monitored access point you’re sent a notification of the security breach through the app. You then have two options: call 911 or alter Your Circle of the situation. While other security systems might be more inclusive in their capabilities, Korner is not only economical but also reliable.
