Iceland Airwaves has announced Mumford & Sons as its Sunday night headliners. These internationally renowned Gentlemen of the Road will bring Reykjavík’s original and best festival to a rousing close on November 5, following in the footsteps of former Airwaves Sunday night headliners PJ Harvey, Hot Chip, The War On Drugs, and The Flaming Lips.
500 tickets for the Mumford & Sons show will go on sale Tuesday, July 25, 6am ET at tix.is, with the remainder available to Iceland Airwaves ticket holders. Attendees can pick up tickets on a first come, first serve basis from the festival’s new media center, Bio Paradis, starting at 5pmSaturday, November 4.
Mumford & Sons are the latest big international name added to an already phenomenal lineup with previous additions Fleet Foxes, Àsgeir, Billy Bragg, Kelly Lee Owens, Aldous Harding, and Mammùt. The beloved Reykjavik festival, now in its 18th year, expands to a second site in Akureyri, in northern Iceland, for the first time ever.
Renowned for showcasing the best of Icelandic talent alongside the biggest and most interesting new international names in music, fans are free to discover local talent such as 19-strong female rap crew Reykjavíkurdætur, up-and-coming popstar Auður, rock from For A Minor Reflection, as well as Björk’s old band Tappi Tíkarras. And that’s not even counting anarcho-punks HAM, fronted by the current Icelandic Minister of Health, Óttarr Proppé.

In an exciting new development, Reykjavík’s longest running and finest music festival will take place across two cities this year. Iceland Airwaves is expanding to Akureyri in northern Iceland for the first time, giving international and local music lovers the opportunity to enjoy the festival in three ways: you can buy a ticket for the whole five day Reykjavík festival ($225.26 / 21.900 ISK) or the two day Akureyri festival ($80.08/ 8,900 ISK), or even do a combination of the two, attending November 2-3 at Akureyri, then flying to Reykjavík for the November 4-5 ($143.23/ 15,900 ISK). As for just the Akureyri festival from November 2-3, 25 artists from the Reykjavík line-up will be performing in this bustling capital of the North, complete with plenty of “off-venue” (daytime) bands too. So why not try a different version of Iceland Airwaves this year and combine with a trip to Akureyri’s stunning answer to the blue lagoon, spectacular highlands, and waterfalls? And Àsgeir will be playing in both locations too.
Since the first edition was held in 1999 in an old airplane hangar, Iceland Airwaves has become one of the premier annual showcases for new music—Icelandic and otherwise—in the world. It’s made a heap of friends and won many fans along the way, and it’s been lavished with praise pretty much everywhere folks write about music. Each Iceland Airwaves sees artists from all over the world perform in Reykjavík, encouraging this by running an open submission to play the festival.
“[Iceland Airwaves] might even be my favorite festival I’ve been to.” Stereogum
“Iceland Airwaves thrills and mystifies with equal strength, offering a choose-your-own adventure for music fans everywhere.” Consequence of Sound
“Iceland Airwaves Is The Best Musical Festival in The West” GQ
“Iceland Airwaves may not have the A&R reputation of South by South West or CMJ, but it does offer as wide a variety of new music as any festival, both local and international (with an obvious focus on Icelandic and Scandinavian talent). And the bookers deserve a mention because they’ve ensured that wherever you alight, at whichever of the dozen or so venues in town (with a couple on the outskirts), you’re bound to find something of interest.” The Guardian
“Five days in Reykjavík, hundreds of bands, thousands of music fans. Iceland Airwaves, the best festival the world!” The Line of Best Fit
“[The scenery] is even more breathtaking than you’ve heard… it’s difficult to conceive of Iceland apart from sublime beauty and mind-expanding vistas.” FLOOD Magazine
“This is likely why I love Airwaves so much, and continue to return year after year, as their intuition to pay attention to what isn’t obvious to many is unmistakably on-point.” Earmilk
“You can forget the stories of the Blue Lagoon and trekking eco-travellers in the glaciers. Organised each year in Reykjavík, Iceland Airwaves festival remains the best reason to visit Iceland” Les Inrocks“Should you go to Iceland Airwaves? Yes, you should. The variety of acts, the quality of their sets, the vividness of the city and the friendly folk of Iceland are just a few of many why’s. There’s always something happening you will like and if you’re clueless because of the busy schedule, just walk in any bar and enjoy a set from a local act on the rise. Take your time and extend your trip with a couple of days to explore the country, as it will make you understand better where all of this Icelandic creativity comes from.” Disco Naïveté
“Airwaves is everything you’ve ever wanted from a festival. You are immersed in music worth exploring, with good food to eat, pools to jump in and landscape to get lost in.” The 405
“Airwaves is not just a music festival in Iceland, it is a celebration of Icelandic music culture with its miraculous facets.” Der Tagesspiegel
“”That was the best line-up so far!” we overheard as we left the venue. And while we might be biased, we can’t help but agree.” i-D
“Gender balance, a sophisticated vibe and great acts mark this festival out. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in a scene of local acts that you probably won’t get to see elsewhere. And what a scene. It sometimes feels as though half of Reykjavík’s population is in a band, or working on a bedroom musical project. This year that was complemented by the likes of Beach House, Hot Chip, Perfume Genius, Father John Misty, and Skepta.” Irish Times
“Iceland’s biggest festival featured this year a terrific cocktail of excellent concerts, spectacular natural beauty and an intense nightlife”. GAFFA
“such a magical musical equation” Crack Magazine
