according to NPD Group via Music Alley >> Bloomberg

Downloads from P2P networks fell 6% last year according to NPD, but 52% of teens say they listened to online radio - up from 34% in 2007 - while 46% used social networking sites to download or stream music - up from 26% in 2007.

Pew Internet reports…

Twitter and similar services have been most avidly embraced by young adults. Nearly one in five (19%) online adults ages 18 and 24 have ever used Twitter and its ilk, as have 20% of online adults 25 to 34. Use of these services drops off steadily after age 35 with 10% of 35 to 44 year olds and 5% of 45 to 54 year olds using Twitter. The decline is even more stark among older internet users; 4% of 55-64 year olds and 2% of those 65 and older use Twitter.

The Rock Band game franchise has surpassed $1 billion in North American retail sales in just 15 months, according to the NPD Group. 40 million songs have been through the Rock Band platform.

TechCrunch reports on some iPhone stats…

  • There are now more than 25,000 iPhone apps in the iTunes Store.
  • iPhone apps have been downloaded 800 million times.
  • 96 percent of all apps are approved
  • The developer SDK has been downloaded 800,000 times
  • 50,000 companies have joined the program
  • 13.7 million iPhones were sold in 2008

TechCrunch reports on the state of the blogosphere…

In its annual state of the blogosphere last year, Technorati revealed that it had indexed 133 million blog records since 2002. In March 2008, Universal McCann published a report that indicated 184 million blogs worldwide were created, with 346 million people reading blogs globally.

Americans purchased 430 million million albums in 2008, 362 million of those CDs. Nielsen does not estimate retail value, but I’d ballpark it in the $6.1 to $6.4 billion range.

Dave Kusek has a great list of stats for the music industry in 2008.  Here’s just a sample:

  • Music purchases (transactions) in 2008 reached 1.5 Billion, marking the fourth consecutive year music sales have exceeded 1 billion; 1.4 billion (2007) vs. 1.2 billion (2006) vs. 1 billion (2005).
  • Overall Album sales (including Albums and Track Equivalent Album sales) declined 8.5% compared to 2007.
  • Total Album sales declined 14% compared to 2007.

HypeBot reports on sales increases at CD Baby.

  • 1,013,478 CDs sold in 2008, compared to 993,175 discs in 2007, a 2% increase
  • 39,100 new album titles added in 2008, up 7% from the prior year
  • Digital distribution revenues for 2008 of $25.4 million, up 45% over 2007
  • $34 million paid to artists in 2008, up 28% from prior year

Digital now accounts for 20% of all recorded music sales, up from 15% in 2007

TechCrunch Reports - iTunes stats.

  • iTunes has now sold six billion songs (it crossed the 5 billion mark last June).
  • Over 10 million different tracks are available on iTunes.
  • Starting today, 8 million songs are DRM-free, and all 10 million will be DRM free by the end of March.
  • There are now over 75 million accounts on iTunes linked to credit cards.
  • In fiscal year 2008, Apple sold 9.7 million Macs
  • Mac sales grew twice as fast as the overall PC market.

SonicBids reports on Pano’s Blog (the Founder of SonicBids)

Some 61,000 gigs got booked by bands using Sonicbids this year. That’s nearly twice as many from last year. The number is impressive, but we know it’s more helpful for our bands to see which gigs are booking which bands. We’re finishing up a new area of the site called, “It Works,” where you’ll be able to track these gigs and the bands getting them.

173,000 of the 1.23M albums available sold at least 1 copy last year.

That means 85% of albums did move a single copy all year.

80% of of all single track sales revenue came from 52,000 tracks.

Individual song downloads will reach about 1,040,000 for the year, with the top 200 tracks accounting for 17% of sales. The best-selling digital song of the year is Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love,” which sold 3.3 million downloads.

Digital Battle reports on selling music through the Rock Band video game.

The statistics reveal that over 28 million track downloads have been made to date. There are 345 tracks by 239 artists on the Rock Band store right now. Harmonix added that it has hit the 500 total song mark for the Rock Band video game

The NY Times reports…

Radio now reaches more than 235 million listeners in a week, versus 232 million last year, according to a study by Arbitron. But those people are listening to the radio less: fewer than 19 hours a week, versus about 20.4 in 2005.
