Me and the Music Industry… A series
I must say it is puzzling indeed to be a part of this living organism called the Music Industry. I have, for many years, tried to understand it by purchasing books, magazines, and information but I did not get any closer to the goal.
Hum, it is something that alludes me, as it is an ever changing being. Just a mere 10 years and all that was the music industry is now no more, and all that will be the industry is a mystery. Wow!
It is really nerve racking to work and make a living in this industry. It is possible, I am actually doing it right now, but will I move forward, and how? Now the industry consists of shows, television contests, and free music. How did we get here? Last time I checked it costs money to record, at least a thousand dollars for a few good prints copies of your demo or finished product, and this is just the very tip of the blade.
Let me break it down to you. A musician, anyone in the music industry who busts their butts to entertain, will endure this for “1” show:
Prepare music, Purchase tracks, if solo act, purchase computer, speakers, mixer, wires, microphone, dollies, batteries, tables, stands, lights, clothes, shoes, business cars, cds, t-shirsts, music stand, print outs of lyrics and music, and their musical instrument and any repairs they may need from time to time.
If a band, please note to make time for band rehearsals to learn new material, unpaid most of the time, band pictures, and all the above.
Traveling is a part of being a successful musician so you will need a van or car big enough to fit everything and then make your way to the venue. Don’t forget about the car payment, insurance, any decals or magnets, tires, and maintenance on the vehicle.
Now you, if solo artist you will do this alone, will have to load the vehicle, drive to the venue, unload the vehicle and set up for the show. The show, let’s say a standard 4 hour show, will consist of 3-4 sets, then you must break down and pack the vehicle again. When getting home, because of the heat that is generated in the vehicle, you must unload the equipment again. Now for many people this seems like a lot of work, and it is, but for the musician, this is passion at work.
There are so many great musicians out there who will never make it to the “Top”, and then there are those who aren’t so great that do, why? Well, most would say it’s who you know, it’s money, it’s putting out, oh don’t give me that look I have been asked many times to put out but I refused outright, and will always refuse! Ok so getting back to who you know and money, those 2 things in combination are great and yes will get you far, and maybe even to the top, but for those of us who don’t have either it is not that simple.
How do you “Make it” now? Will you resort to one of the famous television shows to get your shot? Is there any other way to get noticed in the music industry? Yes there are a few ways that are still working, but the question I have for you is are you willing to put in the hours of work and dedication to get there?
