CASHmusic.org: FREE Twitter, Facebook & User Interface App Codes for Musicians

Through a very random string of website links, I somehow ended up on the website of non-profit organization, CASH Music. This group of incredible musicians and individuals believe that technology should never get in the way of promoting, distributing, or enjoying great music. To help bridge the gap for musicians that may not be as tech savvy as Zoe Keating, CASH Music recently released three INCREDIBLE downloads of free php code that musicians can use to make their websites a better experience for their fans. If you don’t have an official website to represent yourself/your band, these free code downloads are an EXCELLENT place to start, in my opinion. Even if you’re official website is just one page, utilizing these codes will make that one page extremely engaging and interesting.

Get It Together (or what the music industry can learn from Chanel)

The experience that your audience has is the most important thing to focus on. If you are a promoter you have to figure out how you are going to give them the best experience. If you are a band you are going to play your best and give your fans the best experience you are capable of. If you are a DJ you are probably going to get requests. If you are a nice person, you are going to play those requests if you can because it will give that person who asked to hear Lady GaGa or Beyonce a good experience.

What about MySpace?

A while back, I created a Friendster page.  It was great!   I found all kinds of people, and then, actually, maybe it wasn’t all that great.  Their platform never evolved and the novelty wore off.  Hot on the heels of Friendster came MySpace.  Suddenly I had friends, and I could connect with bands, and leave cool comments on their pages, and listen to music, and it was pretty sweet.

Then a stripper named Tiffani tried to be my friend.  Followed by Shawanda, Aimee, and jUnIque.  Then a whole bunch of random people in Guatemala said they knew me.  And wow, there’s a LOT of ads on my MySpace page.   And what’s with all this spam?

Future Now Pt1: The Folk Who Live On The Hill

As a result of a slightly intense email exchange with Andy ‘Hobbes’ Richardson, DJ and promoter of, amongst other nights, the consistently smart Limbo nights at Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms (together with partner Dave Cumings) I felt inspired to explore just how I really felt about the music business.  The exchange was triggered by a small review on my blog of a talk given, on the day of Malcolm Maclaren’s death by Gavin Blain, a Scot who faked an identity as an American rapper in order to scam a major label record deal and has recently released a book about his experiences.  My view was that he appeared to be ungrateful and unnecessarily harsh about the Sony employees he hoodwinked.

This is what Andy thought, though: perhaps McLaren’s death has coloured your interpretation of (the talk) but i see the death of the arch manipulator as heralding a new dawn, the beginning of a more genuine and authentic music industry with less cynicism and more integrity all round….i see Gavin Bain equally as a harbinger for this change.  his bitter-sweet experience emphasises the need for more authenticity and underlines the soulless vacuum offered by (more or less) anything else. ‘

On The Efficacy of Flava Flav

Flava Flav is a fascinating case study in the psychology of fans. He’s credited with popularizing the role of the hype man in rap groups, yet often gets unfairly hated on for this role because it appears “simple” and “pointless”. This is incorrect. Flava Flav had a profound effect on improving Public Enemy.
