Mumford & Sons To Close Iceland Airwaves 2017

Iceland Airwaves has announced Mumford & Sons as its Sunday night headliners. These internationally renowned Gentlemen of the Road will bring Reykjavík’s original and best festival to a rousing close on November 5, following in the footsteps of former Airwaves Sunday night headliners PJ Harvey, Hot Chip, The War On Drugs, and The Flaming Lips.

500 tickets for the Mumford & Sons show will go on sale Tuesday, July 25, 6am ET at tix.is, with the remainder available to Iceland Airwaves ticket holders. Attendees can pick up tickets on a first come, first serve basis from the festival’s new media center, Bio Paradis, starting at 5pmSaturday, November 4.

Mumford & Sons are the latest big international name added to an already phenomenal lineup with previous additions Fleet Foxes, Àsgeir, Billy Bragg, Kelly Lee Owens, Aldous Harding, and Mammùt. The beloved Reykjavik festival, now in its 18th year, expands to a second site in Akureyri, in northern Iceland, for the first time ever.

Renowned for showcasing the best of Icelandic talent alongside the biggest and most interesting new international names in music, fans are free to discover local talent such as 19-strong female rap crew Reykjavíkurdætur, up-and-coming popstar Auður, rock from For A Minor Reflection, as well as Björk’s old band Tappi Tíkarras. And that’s not even counting anarcho-punks HAM, fronted by the current Icelandic Minister of Health, Óttarr Proppé.

Iceland Airwaves now in Akureyri as well as Reykjavík

In an exciting new development, Reykjavík’s longest running and finest music festival will take place across two cities this year. Iceland Airwaves is expanding to Akureyri in northern Iceland for the first time, giving international and local music lovers the opportunity to enjoy the festival in three ways: you can buy a ticket for the whole five day Reykjavík festival ($225.26 / 21.900 ISK) or the two day Akureyri festival ($80.08/ 8,900 ISK), or even do a combination of the two, attending November 2-3 at Akureyri, then flying to Reykjavík for the November 4-5 ($143.23/ 15,900 ISK). As for just the Akureyri festival from November 2-3, 25 artists from the Reykjavík line-up will be performing in this bustling capital of the North, complete with plenty of “off-venue” (daytime) bands too. So why not try a different version of Iceland Airwaves this year and combine with a trip to Akureyri’s stunning answer to the blue lagoon, spectacular highlands, and waterfalls? And Àsgeir will be playing in both locations too.
