Pay to Play?

So I was at a record store recently and a girl came up to me and asked me if I wanted to buy a ticket to see her band at the Knitting Factory (Hollywood) for $15. I politely declined and she continued asking people around the store. She was freaking out because they needed to sell 70 tickets or they were going to get “blacklisted” from the club…..

Simple Strategies for Marketing Your Band in the Next Generation Music Biz

Finding effective strategies for marketing your band is a priority. Most would agree with this, but only when you get time to think about it. The problem for many bands is actually finding the time to think, then think marketing then think ‘strategies’. It amazes me how many times I still come across bands who are still…….

Music Without Labels & Beat-Play Interview with Lokeii

I am originally from Colorado.  I was born in Littleton, Colorado. When I was a year old, my family and I moved to California.  I lived in Orange County until I was six years old, then we relocated to Dallas, Texas.  After Dallas, we moved to St. Louis, MO and I lived there from fourth grade until I graduated from high school.  I normally tell people I am from four states.  Each state I have lived in is a deep part of my psyche and has formed my perception of the world.  The easy answer would be St. Louis because that is where I spent the majority of my life, but like I previously stated, I consider the other three states a very important part of my life.

The Difference Between You & an American Idol

Updated on November 11, 2009 by Registered CommenterKevin English

I speak to musicians everyday who desperatley want to become famous, sell millions of records and pack arenas. Once in awhile I have a chance to chat with entertainers who have been to the mountain top only to look down at how far they had to fall. The space in between is reserved for those who live a “normal” life, but I’ve always been curious to know what it feels like after the crowd has stopped cheering and the units stop selling. I got my wish at CMJ 2009.

Bottle Up & Go!

Writhing around the filthy stage like a man possessed, lead singer Keenan “Hot Pants” Mitchell of Bottle Up & Go stole the show at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival. I’d heard whispers of these derelicts from other artists and music industry execs, but hadn’t quite bought into the hype until I experienced them for myself.

A few hours before the late October show, I literally bumped into one third of the band at an open bar on Bowery in New York City. We shouted introductions at each other as a large group of unrelated indie musicians played Rock Band over the venue’s shitty sound system.

Be a Booking Agent! Lollapalooza Uses Crowdsourcing for 2010 Lineup

Lollapalooza has announced an interesting experiment on their Facebook & Twitter streams yesterday asking fans and followers to submit their top 5 favorite bands for consideration in the Lollapalooza 2010 lineup. They’ve provided a link to a web page asking users to “Be a Booking Agent” and submit any genre of artist by November 11th along with other information such as a name and zip code. This unique festival crowdsourcing strategy comes amidst a number of innovative social media efforts taken by Lollapalooza organizers in 2009. Check out this case study on the festival’s use of social media in 2009 to generate buzz. While exact details of how they will use the information remain somewhat foggy

Top 5 Reasons Your Band Should Have a Website

With the explosion of social networking sites like MySpace, PureVolume and Last.fm the importance of a band having their own website has gone down considerably. Why is this? Well, the number one factor could be that joining these sites is absolutely free. More times than not, a band will go the ‘Free’ route. Free you say? It may all come down to how much you value your time. Think of how much time has been wasted by band members trying to customize their MySpace profile page. If you’re going to take the time to learn HTML and CSS enough to customize the look of your MySpace page, then why don’t you just create your own website!

Creation Over Promotion

Every independent artist in today’s music business has the same question. When will the right person hear my music? The problem with this way of thinking is the fact that you have now set your focus on pleasing someone that could ‘potentially’ help you out, rather than focusing on the creation and production of new music. Musicians are supposed to create new music to stimulate the fans interest, but in today’s market every band and record label has the focus set towards publicizing the already created music.

Are you looking to have your CD Mastered? Get a free sample and mix evaluation this week!

Having a great sounding CD is one of the most important things for the success of your music.  Why do you think all the big labels spend $$ on professional mastering?

This is where I can help.  Although I have 20+ years experience in New York City, working with all the majors along with my Grammy Entry Nominations,  I can help you Sound Your Best and it won’t break the bank with my Indie Friendly Pricing.  But don’t take my word for it, visit my website and see what my Indie Clients are saying!  ACMastering.com.

For the next week, you can take advantage of the free mastering samples using my proprietary Heavy Vinyl™ CD Mastering Techniques with a complementary mix evaluation.  You have not heard mastering until I’ve done one of your songs.

For the best sound, please use .wav .aif. or .aiff file formats. Don’t put heavy compression, limiting or ‘mastering’ plugins on your mixes because I’ll have no headroom to work with. You can upload mixes here:

 http://acmastering.cutesendit.com/

I look forward to hearing your music.
