The 10 Rules Of Networking

An insight Bobby begins his article with is more important today than ever:

Regardless of how much talent you may have, unless someone hears about what you’re doing you’ll end up creating in your bedroom your whole life.”

This is not surprising given the ever-increasing daily uploads to Spotify (currently 40,000 tracks per day) and the general democratisation of music production, distribution, promotion and consumption through digitisation and globalisation.

In this article, I will go into each of Bobby Owsinski’s 10 rules in more detail without going into the book’s details.

Networking For Introverts

As a newsletter recipient of Dorie Clark (keynote speaker, author of “Stand Out Networking”) I became aware of a fantastic article in the Harvard Business Review that suits my company tamanguu very well, in which she discusses the challenges and solutions for introverts in business networking.

Many music artists, but also music managers, who I met in my music business career, were introverted people. It sounds as paradoxical as it is when Dorie Clark characterises herself as introverted, despite she is often on stage as a keynote speaker. However, performing on stage is something different than business networking off the stage. Also for extroverts, this article includes some useful hints and insights.

How To Develop A Context For Your Music

Guest post by Ayla Smith. This article originally appeared on Soundfly’s Flypaper

Online audiences are a powerful engine. When people listen online, they can easily share your music far and wide. Getting discovered is not dependent on someone walking into a record store, and it’s easy to find out who’s listening and where they’re from so you can maximize your impact. But too often, a song alone is not enough to tell your full story.

Why You Should Really Avoid Open Mics

Guest post by Jeremy Young. This article originally appeared on Soundfly’s Flypaper

I don’t know how to ease into this article nicely and slowly, so I’ll just dive right into the shark tank: Open mics basically suck.

Sure, they have some value. And by some value, I just mean they have very little value, easily replaceable and replicable in many other live music contexts. But they do help amateur songwriters out in a few ways, namely by offering opportunities for networkingon-stage practice time, and a chance to hash out some parts you’ve still not settled on in front of an intimate audience that can give you honest feedback, before taking that song to the studio.

Top 10 Online Resources For Female Musicians

Guest post by Bree Noble. This article originally appeared on Soundfly’s Flypaper.

Since 2007, I have been a champion for female musicians. It all started a bit by accident. Back in 2000, I had created a hobby online radio station on Live365 called Women of Substance, a personal playlist of female artists, mostly indies, that I used as a personal way to listen to the music I enjoyed at work.

In 2007, I was a touring indie artist myself and looking to get more exposure. I was so frustrated by the lack of coverage for female musicians on terrestrial and satellite radio that I decided to take matters into my own hands. I turned that hobby playlist into a fledgling online radio station, and started adding new artists and promoting it everywhere I could.

How To Get An Endorsement As A Musician

This guest post by Monique Hernandez-Fuentes of GuitarTricks.com originally apeared on the Bandzoogle Blog.

Recently one of our partners asked for the best way to get endorsed as a musician. We have come a long way in the last nearly forty years from when endorsements were easy to come by for musicians everywhere who simply had an awesome look and a cool sound.

Nowadays, the industry has changed dramatically, so I thought I would offer some pointers for the best way to get an endorsement from the company you love.

Business Cards For Musicians

Business cards, we’ve all had them. Some of us swear by them, others say “neh” and do away with them. Whatever type you are, I’m sure someone’s handed you one at some point. And you probably thought, “what the hell am I supposed to do with this?” Or maybe you were like “sweet dude, I’m gonna call you right away.” Either way it probably got you thinking. You may have thought, “wow this person really comes prepared.” I seriously doubt you thought, “heh, look this guy, what a dinosaur, still uses business cards.”

In this article we’re going to take a look at a few things you can do with business cards to stand out amongst the sea of musicians out there, and why business cards for musicians still can be used today.

Why You're Not Getting What You Want

Success is built on determination, hard work, and being in the right place at the right time. Many attribute the last part to luck; I attribute it to asking for what you want and being open (aka ready) to receiving it. Many musicians have mastered the determination and hard work parts, but they still haven’t built the following and/or garnered the consideration they desire from the industry.
