What questions do you have as you pave your path in the music industry?
It’s been seven years and Facebook has gone from a small, exclusive social network - for college students only - to now being almost as ubiquitous as your driver’s license. Everybody has it. Even your grandparents. But how much longer will Facebook last? With the advent of Google +, which has started as an exclusive social network - by invite only - it’s appears that Facebook may have finally run its course.
The challenge of being an independent artist, especially when you’re starting off is that you have no one but yourself to answer to. This of course can be both a good and bad thing. For one, if you’re driven - you can do many things very fast because you don’t have to delegate. On the other hand, some days, nothing happens at all because no one but yourself is responsible for your career (and you decided to just stay at home and comment on all your friend’s Facebook pages.) A very real issue is that most of what we do as artists does not pay financially (at least not immediately). Most of it is groundwork, most of it is the business side of our careers. This of course makes us comes to terms…
Todays success of Rage Against the Machine beating X factors Joe and preventing the usual Simon Cowell controlled Christmas No 1 here in the UK is a welcome change for many. We need it! Change can be a good thing for all sorts of reasons. So I’m all up for change, how about you? But embracing change is what can make the real difference especially for those involved in making the music.
Recently Hypebot readers, myself included were able to put questions to indie artist Amanda Palmer about here approach to DIY promotions. The band Veronica’s fronted by 24-year-old twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, recently released a gritty re-recorded version of their 2005 debut single “4ever.” Here is a big lesson for songwriter’s both up and coming and those already well established artists - Yes even the likes of the Jonas Brothers etc…..
