THE DEMO IS DEAD

Why I don’t do demos.

Arif Mardin, Mutt Lange,Trevor Horn, Berry Gordy, Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, George Martin and Quincy Jones are gentlemen who have shared a common philosophy regarding recording contemporary popular music.
That philosophy is - a respect for spontaneity however, not making it their deity.More than being record producers, these guys have been consummate ARRANGERS and editors of recorded music.

Ozric Tentacles 30th aniversary tour and album review

This album review coincides with Ozric Tentacles 30th anniversary tour, any band that has been going for 30 years through thick and thin deserves respect and thats before you have even heard their music. The music itself will satisfy dance heads, rock aficionados and ambient lovers, and often within the space of a single track !  A band that has remained true to their counter culture and free festival roots. This will hopefully explain why this awe inspiring band has been uncompromisingly making their unique style of music for such a long time….

Recording Festival

Many a musician has had that lovely daydream about recording for free with an award winning producer in a legendary studio, and making it big so they could travel the world. Recording Festival has captured all these dreams and combined them into one reality, offering artists the chance to win a free two week recording session with a stellar team of music producers (with awards, even Grammys, on their resumes), and doing all this recording in the heart of Ireland in an all expenses paid trip. Is this a dream come true? Most definitely. It will be a dream come true for not one, but for three lucky artists / bands.

Why Your Favorite Concert Recommendation Website is Terribly Outdated

The digital age may have changed music as we know it, but most concert recommendation websites haven’t quite caught on to the fact we’re living in the 21st century.

Whether you attend one or 40 concerts a year, all concert attendees have a right to be put in tune with the best music shows in their area.

Artists: The Market Changed

Thought of the following concerning indie artists who want to sell their music - not as a song but as background in radio commercials. It comes from an interaction I had with an artist whom I greatly respect.
“It’s not just mass consumption today; it’s mass competition.”

How My Internship Benefited The Future of Music

The Echo Nest is the world’s leading music intelligence company, and I helped it get even better. During my Northeastern University “Music in Online and Mobile Environments” course with Professor Bob Lyons, I learned about the company and the digital music blog it publishes, Evolver.fm. While on co-op in the fall, I read Evolver.fm regularly and began to learn about the extensive world of music technology. I applied for an internship for my Spring 2013 semester and, much to my excitement, was selected to work on The Echo Nest’s Quality Assurance (QA) Marketing team.

MUSIC INDUSTRY TO INDIES: "LET THEM EAT CAKE"

Yes, we will be comparing big music and media to the French aristocracy who lost their heads in the French Revolution. No, I do not believe it to be a literal comparison, but figuratively, it’s pretty darn close.

Google’s Eric Schmidt: “I would like to tell you that the internet has created such a level playing field that the Long Tail is absolutely the place to be — that there’s so much differentiation, there’s so much diversity, so many new voices.  Unfortunately, that’s not the case. What really happens is something called a power law, with the property that a small number of things are very highly concentrated and most other things have relatively little volume.  Virtually all of the new network markets follow this law. So, while the tail is very interesting, the vast majority of revenue remains in the head. And this is a lesson that businesses have to learn.  While you can have a Long Tail strategy, you better have a head, because that’s where all the revenue is. But when you get everybody together they still like to have one superstar. So, we love the Long Tail, but we make most of our revenue in the head, because of the math of the power law. And you need both, by the way. You need the head and the tail to make the model work.”

STRANGENESS: Get back MORE than you put in?  What?

As seen in the 2013 October issue of Guitar World Magazine, Ken D. Webber, CEO of Plague of Smiles TM, is running a Kickstarter campaign (that is currently LIVE and needs your support) that highlights a new method of music distribution.  It is called PARANORMAL STRANGENESS.

When was the last time itunes put money back into your pocket?  This new method of using dropcards solves that dilemma and when picked up by artists and fans will produce a new music scene by restructuring the industry.  All anyone has to do is pull out a calculator and read the Guitar World Poster tiers to see how the dropcards come into play.
