Meet the digital love-child of MTV and Rolling Stone magazine

My team and I run an indie music blog that we’re turning into a streaming service & indie zine — sort of a digital love-child of MTV and Rolling Stone magazine. We’re doing everything radically different, starting with a financial model that makes digital work for artists (instead of the other way around).

Tidal Wave

Jay-Z’s Tidal has made many ripples, however the splash seems to have been short lived. The March 2015 buy of Tidal has become a troubling investment for investors at the forefront. One has to ask themselves if Tidal’s business plan makes any sense in a time when consumers see very little value in purchasing music. To expect consumers to pay $9.99 for a standard streaming service and $19.99 for a high-resolution service seems pretty crazy. What’s even more crazy is that Tidal as a company has not properly marketed it’s service to the consumer. Everyone is left in the dark, maybe they are left worrying or maybe they press on to the next service. I believe if Tidal is the biggest thing since MTV, then they should have marketed it like it was.

Beats Music v. Spotify

By John Lahr

As of January 21st Spotify now has a legitimate contender in the music streaming market, as Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats Music steps into the ring. It is the culmination of eighteen months of development after Dr. Dre’s lucrative consumer electronics company purchased MOG in July of 2012. Entering with a soft launch in late January, the service announced its arrival in spectacular style with a Super Bowl advertising blitz featuring T.V personality Ellen DeGeneres. While Beats Music and Spotify have many similar features, both services have very different views of the future of the streaming marketplace, and different ways of communicating their vision to consumers.

Features Comparison

Like Spotify, Beats Music offers a library of over 20 million songs to choose from, the ability to create playlists and sync them to your mobile device for offline listening, and a radio feature1.  However Beats offers far more advanced features for discovering music thanks to its “Sentence” radio and “Just For You” curated playlists tailored to taste preferences you give when signing up.

New Streaming Service For Underground Music Launches

WASHINGTON, DC, April 29th, 2013 — UndergroundMusic.fm wants to make underground music mainstream. The startup has officially launched a new Internet service that provides a simple way to play and share underground music.

“It sounds paradoxical because it’s never been possible before,” says co-founder Max Acchione. “The underground has always been the source of musical innovation: blues, jazz, rock, punk, hip-hop, electronic, etc., and being inside it as it happens is exciting. It’s hard to experience because it’s so spread out and recording and distribution have been expensive. That’s why we have a mainstream in the first place. But today, the underground is thriving with affordable recording technology and it can be directly accessed through the Internet on ubiquitous devices.”

Music, The Distributed Economy

I am an Rdio premium subscriber (switched from Spotify recently), I also use SoundCloud a lot and… I still have to buy music from iTunes. It’s not that I like to own stuff but just sometimes it’s the only way to listen to what I want, like the recent release of Ludovico Einaudi“In a Time Lapse” (which I highly recommend by the way).

Yes, “In a Time Lapse” is available on Spotify, still there is a lot of stuff which is not on Spotify but, for example, on SoundCloud. But that makes me think that there is some cool music which doesn’t hit SoundCloud and so on…

To Stream or Not to Stream: Pro and Cons

Everyone has heard so much hoopla about streaming and subscription services. Everyone has also heard of Lady Ga Ga . Well, here’s an article every musician needs to read http://www.good.is/posts/thieving-and-streaming-spotify-paid-gaga-167-for-1-million-spins-of-poker-face/

Lady Ga Ga had over a million spins on Spotify and was paid a whopping $167.00. So who does streaming benefit? It sure isn’t the artists who make the music. Spotify claims it’s loosing money. Since the inception of streams and subscription services, labels and artists have watched their digital income plummet into the toilet. Anyone know a good plumber to retrieve all those “would have been” downloads?

Is music streaming less threatened by piracy?

Hi,

This is rather a starting point for a debate than a post of knowledge.

I was wondering: There is a vast amount of piracy sites to download music and movies. There is also a vast amount of illegal movie streaming sites.

Why is there (almost) no illegal music streaming site? The only one coming to my mind is grooveshark but that’s basically it.
