Meet the digital love-child of MTV and Rolling Stone magazine

My team and I run an indie music blog that we’re turning into a streaming service & indie zine — sort of a digital love-child of MTV and Rolling Stone magazine. We’re doing everything radically different, starting with a financial model that makes digital work for artists (instead of the other way around).

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich Might Be Getting old

The Music scene used to be for young people only, now to use the overused cliche 40 is the new 30, 30 is the new 20 and so on. As we all get older it is very tempting to look back and say that the music and the scene were better 5,10,15 years ago depending on our age. So if you are pushing 30 then I am sure that you have caught yourself complaining about the way the scene that you are into is changing and expressing your personal gripes to others that might actually care along with you. I bring this up because Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich just gave a pretty candid interview with pitchfork…

Ego Vs Identity: Improving Artists' Awareness

We are in the Globalization era. Although its idea is sometimes misleading, it has undoubtedly helped to unify the world, the markets, merge people together and increase the circulation of ideas, languages and popular culture. The key is to unify.

Unify may express wave the same flag, connect different people or have something heterogeneous becoming homogeneous. The risk of a system of unbridled globalization, which is a system of unification and agglomeration without distinction, is conforming to the “herd”, as Nietzsche warned us years ago.

I think there should be always a need to preserve our identity, our essential nature, express ourselves, what we are. That should be a primary need for everyone.

Some of the most tangible aspects and forms in which globalization manifests itself in everyday life are the Internet, advertising, fashion, the expansion of world markets. So it may happen to celebrate hallowen in Italy,  taste Napolean pizza in NYC, and eating Chinese in Naples. All these experiences are very common in today’s world and I think that ultimately improve the quality of our life because they increase the possibilities of choice of an individual.

Whatever Happened to Rock Mythology?

This is a question that every now and again turns up in my discussions with my friends and colleagues about the alleged decline of the so - called Rock and Roll music and the state of the industry.

And it’s the same question I am asking you all: Whatever happened to Rock Mithology? I am an avid consumer of anything related to music production philosophy and I am obsessed with observing the interactions between the musicians, activity I enjoy and carry out with the eye of the behaviourist.

Musicians are a weird breed, they either lead a miserable life or are kings on Earth, and sometimes they switch back and forth between the two statuses (sic transit gloria mundi, somebody would say).

It’s only natural that their manifestations are at least unconventional to the eyes of the mortals. But I digress.

I love, I was saying, for example, to watch the DVD series “Classic Albums”, where great records from the past (Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of The Moon”, Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key Of Life” and the list goes on) are dissected: the artists and the producers sit in front of the mixing desk and point out all the cool tricks they used during the sessions and everybody talks about the philosophy and the scope of the production.

Global Music Ecosystem & Cultural Implications

I recently did an interview of this young mash-up artist that turned out to be a really good exemple of how technologies are changing the way music is being produced and promoted. He is 22, comes from the North East of Brazil and rules the Asian Mash-up remix scene. Leaving on his first tour to South America in early 2011, DJ Masa is living proof that the new music ecosystem is emerging and that its cultural implications are real.

You are getting close to 100,000 downloads on official.fm alone. I saw that you have 12 Million + views on your You Tube profile … This is quite significant, can you tell us a little bit of your story?

100.000 downloads already? Wow!! I hope it didn’t make your servers busy! Well, I’m a 22 years old journalist and I’m from Brazil. I’ve been following the Asian Pop scene since 2003, when I discovered J-pop and K-pop through the Internet. That time I joined a lot of forums and fan sites to keep me updated and to contribute with that community anyway that I could. I started to learn about music production software in 2005, when I released my first mashup and shared it with my online friends.
