How To Pick The Right Beats! A Rapper’s Guide to Hot Instrumentals

For any up and coming hip-hop artist, there are two things you need to make sure you have: mic skills and hot beats. To a certain extent, beats are the most important thing you need, because often times, people won’t even care what you are talking about if your beats aren’t hot! I’m sure you know some rappers who get plenty of attention with limited skills because they get crazy beats, so it makes it that much more important when you can really spit.

Your First Song: From Idea to Production

It’s always exciting to hit upon a song idea which can be the next big sensation. But translating that idea into a song or an album can be a daunting task, especially if music production is new for you. In this article we will demystify the process of creating songs from scratch.

A song starts with either a catchy melody or a set of powerful lyrics. Then music is added to the song, the song is given a structure and then it is recorded and goes for final post production. Let us look at each of these processes in detail.

5 Musicians and Their Magnificent Motors

Power chords and horsepower is such a beautiful convergence. They go together, well, like rock and roll.

Early rockers frequently praised the glory of their little deuce coupes and hot rod Lincolns. Sammy Hagar proudly boasts about being unable to drive 55. Even car commercials play up the car-music connection — the classy clunkers the “old folks” drive are accompanied by sedate, classical music, while the fast, sporty models include plenty of screaming guitar riffs. The not-so-subtle message is: “Only rock stars like YOU are meant for a car like this.”

Has Digital Distribution And Production Had A Positive Impact On The Industry?

With the advent of both digital production and distribution methods becoming more popular over the past decade the landscape of music has changed with it.
The question is, has this been a positive one?
The answer to that probably differs according to who you speak to.  For some people it will be seen as a boon allowing more freedom and productivity than what was possible before. Yet others will argue it’s opened the floodgates to a swarm of low quality work diluting music in general in the process.

Guitar Effects Pedals - Part One - Introduction and the Evolution of the Effects Pedal

Phosphene Productions -
Introduction and Evolution of the Effects Pedal -

In this blog my intention is to shed a light on guitar effects pedals.  I have broken this blog into three sections which will break down the evolution of the effects pedal into modern-day music:  The creation of the pedals and their early implications; the effects themselves and how they work; and finally some tone tricks and how to maximize your tone with effects pedals.
Please also understand that I am neither an electronics engineer nor a historian and that this article is based partially on fact and partially on opinion. I hope you will enjoy it either way.

What Is Your Creative Brand?

Artists and authors are talking about creative branding. But what exactly is a brand? And do you have to have one?

As a label and publisher, we get a lot of questions about artist branding. After marketing nearly 100 releases, we understand the importance of branding to an artist’s success. The differences between good and bad branding are as important as the differences between good and bad music. And it isn’t just about the packaging.

Your creative brand = who you are + what you do. It is the transmission of your creative identity to an audience. And yes, you need it.

Production Music: A convenient solution for media producers

Also known as library music, production music is generally written specifically for a piece of content such as film or radio which requires accompaniment. In the early days of silent film, this would be delivered on site by a pianist or other musician who would play along to the events on the screen as they unfolded.

The Cassette Store Called ...

Riding the coat tails of Record Store Day (20-April-2013), it was just announced that 07-September-2013 will be the first International Cassette Store Day. I swore this had to be a parody when I first got the Tweet, but the organizers seem sincere and committed (if misguided). It should be self-evident that the idea of Cassette Store Day makes no sense. But, if you need convincing, let me count the ways it fails.

Music Programming / Sequencing 101 – Essential Preparation

I’ve often been asked, “What are some things I can do to improve my music programming / sequencing?” In my experience, the most important thing you can do is: Learn how to play the instruments you are programming! You don’t have to become a virtuoso, but a basic understanding of how each instrument work will take your music programming to the next level. I’ve heard drum programming before where they programmed a tom fill while the ride cymbal kept going. The fill was complex enough that what was programmed would be physically impossible to play. Or a programmed flute plays a 15 measure line without a breath. Those are dead giveaways that it was programmed. With the quality of the soft-synths and samplers these days it’s stunning how, if you have an understanding of the instrument, you can have VERY believable tracks/parts. And not only believable, but musical too

Conquer Entertainment

I subscribe to Hypebot, Digital Music News, and a few other industry aggregators and this location seems to be the first point where I can actually ask a question to like minded individuals.

I was recently contacted about joining an organization called Conquer Entertainment.  After sitting through the presentations from two separate individuals, and watching everything I can find online, I need to ask the following questions.
