The Artist Compensation Storm

As sure as dark clouds gather in hurricane season, a storm is brewing around artist compensation. Art and technology are at odds. However, it wasn’t always that way.

From the advent of cassette multitracks in the ’80s, to the arrival of digital multitracks in the ’90s, to the maturation of digital audio workstations in the ’00s, affordable, cutting-edge technology enabled recording artists to seize the means of production. The rise of the internet enabled them to marshal the means of distribution. Without those home studios, without a free internet, artists would still be trying to catch the ear of some well-connected impresario who could foot the bill for commercial studio time and old-media publicity. It’s a plain fact: thanks to technology, producing and distributing music is a lot easier than it used to be. And artists have reaped the benefits.

New regulation in Belgium: restriction of volume level

As some of you may or may not know, Belgium’s got a lot of great bands. Just think about dEUS, The Black Box Revelation, Hooverphonic, Millionaire, etc. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you should definitely check them out (not that I’m advertising over here, just exchanging tips). Now these bands are already pretty well-known, here in our small country. But a lot of other equally great bands that are just starting out as artists, haven’t earned their named yet in the musicbizz. And that’s why a lot of people are pretty angry about the soon-to-be new regulation regarding the volume during concerts and festivals. The Flemish Minister of Cultural Affairs, Joke Schauvliege (Christian Democrate party), decided to restrict the maximum sound level to a hundred decibels, in local pubs, concert venues and during festivals, in order to limit hearing loss. A rule that pisses off almost any Belgian musician.

In the Music Industry, the Best Form of Revenge is Success

Rejection. It can sting. Whether it is a promoter or a record label who doesn’t want to give you the opportunity to shine or it is a critic who writes a bad review of your music, the reality is that sooner or later, you’re going to face rejection. How you deal with that rejection can ultimately determine your success.

Make Your Merchandise Personal: Make More Money

A few years ago I managed a local Portland artist called Sean Flinn & the Royal We. Sean had just finished recording his first full length album, but wanted to wait until the following fall to release it. We started to work together in the winter and he needed something to build some buzz through the first half of the year. I suggested a digital EP with an exclusive track that wouldn’t be on the full length. Sean was in a number of notable projects in Portland, but he still needed to promote his own music. Releasing a digital EP would help garner revenue from a low overhead version of the upcoming album. Sean had also set up a short tour through west coast to prep that area for an album tour later in the year. We knew we could just sell the digital EP via Bandcamp, but he wanted a physical option to sell at live shows. This became a bit of an obstacle.

MondoTunes, CDBaby, TuneCore, and ReverbNation: How They Measure Up

If you wanted to sell music around the world twenty years ago, you needed to get picked up by a major label. That meant demo tapes, postal services, and constant performing on tours. That was all a ton of fun, but extremely hard work and very expensive, besides. That’s where music distribution online comes in.

An Open Letter to My Senator, Ron Wyden, Regarding the Internet Radio Fairness Act

Senator Wyden,

I am writing regarding the Internet Radio Fairness Act. I am a musician, registered Oregon voter and participant in the Future of Music Policy Summit on November, 13 2012. In fact, I played the role of Oregonian #1 during your speech. I volunteered my time to contribute to the event and involved myself by managing the stage for the presentations, an activity I receive 20-35 dollars/hour for in Portland, placing me in a front row seat for the event. We met immediately before you began your speech. I am fairly certain you don’t know my name, it is Graham Smith-White. Given the nature of the government in these United States, I am not surprised by this. I most certainly do not think it positive, however. It is this discontent which moves me to write to you on the matter of the Internet Radio Fairness Act which you introduced to the United States Senate and supported in your presentation at the FMC Policy Summit.

Facebook Edgerank for Musicians 101: Increasing Fan Engagement

The latest update to Facebook’s ‘Edgerank’ algorithm is a bit confusing and has many of you concerned about losing access to your Facebook fanbase. There are differing opinions on why the change was made (whether it was to force you to pay for ads or — the more likely scenario — to take clutter out of newsfeeds).

Here are some tips to help you avoid your Facebook posts getting lost in the clutter:

1. Don’t beg your followers to click “show in newsfeed”

Some bands are asking their fans to click “show in newsfeed,” which ensures that the band’s posts will… show in their fans’ newsfeeds! This is not recommended. Yes, it will work for those fans who can’t see your posts in their newsfeed, but Edgerank changes went into effect in late September; if your fans can already see your post in their newsfeed asking them to take such an action, having them go to your page and check a box that is already checked may cause confusion and even some accidental un-checks!

2. Don’t ask your followers to click “Get Notifications”

10 Steps Ever Artist Must Take to Promote Their Tour

Do you have a tour or one-off show coming up? Let’s talk about how to promote it.

Now, I understand that there are many debates on where the responsibility of promoting lies (some argue the venue/promoter, some argue the artist). Those debates aside, let me say this: the time and money that goes into strategically promoting your shows will always provide a good return on investment. Who doesn’t want to gain a reputation as a hard-working artist willing to do nearly whatever it takes to make the show a success?

The Last Bison Makes a Statement with "Inheritance" in Nashville, TN

When artists like Steve Delopoulos, Neulore, The Last Bison, Canon Blue, and Paper Route share the stage in Nashville, you can be sure to see a full crowd in attendance.  That was the scene last night at 3rd & Lindsley as industry professionals, executives, investors, and fans showed up to a showcase put on by Wedgewood Circle.  Proceeds from the show (only $10) went directly to the Wedgewood Circle Artist Fund, a group that exists to give “artists the capacity to be sustained and grow in their culture space.”  Wedgewood initially launched in 2007 to “invest in artists whose calling is to the common good… and to be in the world, but not of it.”  The investors and board members have supported all the bands mentioned above, which collectively formed one of the best showcases that I’ve ever seen in Nashville.  Despite their shortened set, Paper Route killed it as usual, playing songs from their new album, The Peace of Wild Things.  It was also my second time seeing Canon Blue in concert, but this time Daniel James was joined on stage by Zach Farro on drums and Vince Scheuerman on guitar/vocals, along with horn and string sections.  The result was phenomenal, and it was amazing to see the songs from his debut album, Rumspringa, come alive with the addition of quality musicians and full band performance.  There were countless great moments, but the true surprise of the evening was witnessing the performance from The Last Bison.

CAZZETTE Releases Anticipated Debut Album "Eject" with Popular Streaming Service (11/12/13)

Cazzette is about to blow up, or at least that’s what one of the world’s largest streaming services claims.  When their debut album Eject drops tomorrow, it will be marketed in full force by Spotify to millions of users worldwide.  The major marketing push is really more of an experiment for the company to discover whether or not they can help break new artists.  It just so happens that their first “experiment” is being done with one of the most hyped EDM artists of the year.  Cazzette is a Swedish DJ duo consisting of 23-year-old Alexander Björklund and 19-year old Sebastian Furrer.  They just wrapped up a 17-date September tour in the US and have received support from David Guetta, Tiësto, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, and Martin Solveig to name a few.  The underground success for the duo began a year ago when Cazzette released their first track, a remix for Avicii entitled “Sweet Dreams (CAZZETTE meet AT NIGHT Mix), which charted at the Top20 on Beatport Top100 General Charts for months.  Soon after, their bootleg of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” landed the number one spot on HYPE MACHINE Most Popular after being uploaded on their Soundcloud page.
