How To Name Your Band

So, you need to come up with a great band name huh?

I run a covers band agency. Every week, my site gets contacted by artists with a range of names, from the deadly serious to the incredibly silly, and everything in between.

It often seems like the band name was made up on the spot, and as soon as the words were out of the drummer’s mouth (or whoever suggested it) everyone else approves it because coming up with band names is hard. It doesn’t matter, so long as the music is good, right?

Actually, no. Your band name matters. It’s the first impression you will offer a potential client or venue. It will give them a clear idea of what you sound like, before you play a single note.

Look through your local gig listings and chances are you’ll find as many tribute bands and singers as there are original acts. Their popularity continues to grow and not just in smaller venues. Some are able to fill the largest sites like Wembley Arena and the O2. The Australian Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin Experience, Bootleg Beatles and Hollywood U2 are examples of successful tribute bands that have performed thousands of shows across the globe, year after year. These acts have earned their success by replicating the original band’s music to a very high standard, as well as providing an exciting visual performance alongside the sonic conventions.

Over the past ten years or so, the wedding and function band industry has become highly competitive, attracting some of the most accomplished musicians and singers in the industry, many with previous and ongoing record deals.

As the music industry evolved into the digital age, recording new music and engaging with fans became cheaper and easier, creating an abundance of upcoming artists, each looking for new ways to break through. Another side-effect was a change-up in the traditional business model and that’s meant more initial legwork and smaller advances for independent artists.
