The Downsides To Using Fiverr For Music Production

A couple weeks ago, I published a post about how we’re living in an age where you don’t necessarily need to be connected nor talented at music production in order to produce songs.  As a songwriter, we are often blessed (and sometimes tormented) with the gift of melodies, hooks and verses popping into our heads, but justice (for the song) is truly served when it’s produced.

With limited human resources (nearby to help to produce the song), I opted to produce an entire song— from start-to-finish— using a popular online marketplace, Fiverr.com.  It was called an experiment— I had no idea whether it would work or not.  Within a week timeframe, the entire song idea became a song distributed across the web.

In the review of the experiment, I posted the exact processes to enable other would-be songwriters (in a similiar situation) to be able to replicate the experiment for their own songs.  However, I didn’t cover the downsides to using Fiverr for music production.  We’ll cover those here.

The Downsides to Fiverr (for Music Production), include:

- Creative limitations imposed by the amount of active sellers in the market

- Seemingly endless back-and-forth messages

- Satisficing gig deliveries in order to complete the project

Creative Limitations

You can get a lot done using the Fiverr Marketplace.  Need a horn? Boom.  Violin?  Right there.  But, what if you’re really looking for a choir?  Well, it’s not that easy to find on Fiverr.  In addition, you may find sellers that are offering a production you need (for your song), though, their gig is “paused”.  No dice.

Back-and-forth Messaging

Reach-out to a seller on Fiverr to get a custom offer and see what I mean?  There is a lot of back-and-forth to close the deal.  They may have quoted high in order to capture more revenue for the gig.  Or they might want to try to be a bit pushy to get your business.  Either way, the back-and-forth messaging can be a negative experience when attempting to create your song using Fiverr.

Satisficing

After booking the gigs, and awaiting the delivery, sometimes the final product isn’t as you expected.  Now with Fiverr, you can choose not to accept the gig (in order for them to rework their gig delivery), though, some sellers don’t take this as serious as they should.  So the back-and-forth communication can sometimes result in a sub-par production which is not the ideal when producing your next hit song!

Though there are several positives to consider when opting for this unconventional approach to producing songs using Fiverr, you should be aware of the downsides which can occur.
