This company wants to change the brazilian music industry
In the 90s, many USA rappers with lack of financial resources used to record amateur mixtapes and go out on the streets to sell the music by themselves. In Brazil, at the same time a similar movement was on course in the northeast of the country, dozens of popular bands would record their own CDs and distribute them for free all over Brazil in order to get famous and book concerts.
By the digital age, just as the rappers found their place on platforms such as Soundcloud, in Brazil the artists started uploading their content to a UGC music platform called Sua Musica (‘Your Music’ in portuguese) to promote their art. Sua Música was founded in 2010 and nowadays it has more than 16 thousand verified artists and more than 9 million monthly active users, competing head by head in Brazil with the likes of Spotify, Youtube, Deezer, etc. Sua Música is a UGC music platform with 100% focus on local content and independent artists.
“Sua Música started as a website 10 years ago considering the historical context of the artists that use the platform. They used to distribute CDs on the streets for free with the purpose of becoming famous and sell up concerts. Sua Música was able to update this old habit by bringing to the internet the street’s behaviour”, explains Roni Maltz Bin, Sua Música’s CEO.
After 7 years focusing on developing and growing their music platform, Sua Música took a new approach two years ago, diversifying their business model and offering the first real 360° solution for independent artists in Brazil.
Today, beyond the music platform, Sua Música operates their own digital distribution company, called Sua Música Digital, in partnership with Merlin, to sign and distribute music in other DSPs; more recently they create their own artists management company, Sua Música Records, that will invest in the most promising artists careers.
“We found out that many artists who started their careers at Sua Música ended up looking for other companies in order to distribute their music to other DSPs or manage their careers. We understood that we were in a privileged position in order to enter this space, mainly because of the big data generated by our platform and our proximity to the artists. Creating a 360° music entertainment company was a clear next step”, annouces Mr. Roni Maltz.
