THE ERA OF MUSIC 3.0 IS REAL... HERE'S PROOF

In this article I pronounce the new era of music, Music 3.0, is real.  As proof I offer this video chronicling the band For All I Am using Song Prediction, a digital tool that predicts the commercial potential of a newly recorded song, and even better, provides suggestions for improving it.  Digital tools like Song Prediction are also the replacement for today’s record label promotion spending. They allow bands to give fans new experiences that surprise and delight, causing growth to go viral. If making great music and music promotion are a band’s most difficult jobs, the digital solutions to do it better, quicker and cheaper are here… right now.

Fan the Fire of Fandom

you might have a spark.
but you need a flame.

and once you have a flame,
you need a fire.

in fact, you need a raging fucking inferno.

you need to burst into flames and create the most fantastic of fans.
that’s how you create true, sustainable longevity.

it’s done by your fans and through your fans.
your most passionate fans are the key to your success.

are you fanning the fire of fandom?

without fans, your thing won’t be heard.
without fans, your thing won’t be seen.
it won’t be shared. it won’t be talked about.
and it sure as hell won’t be bought.

Marketing music on Twitter: Some Do’s and Don’ts

Simply joining Twitter and relentlessly tweeting links to your work is not the best way forward; music marketing on Twitter, if it’s just a series of uninteresting 140 character updates from someone without an established profile or follow-list can be viewed as spam and you will not get any followers. A feed that constantly churns the same link over and over can lead to accounts being banned. It’s better for the account owner to make sure that links in their profile lead to their personal website (tracked with analytics), and to establish a “Twitter presence”, i.e. tweets over a series of weeks or months that show them to be worth following, and interesting in their own right.

The explosion of social networking over the last half-decade has given musicians of all genres a new, and indeed global showcase for their talents. Perhaps the major success story in this field is the micro-blogging site, Twitter, where a performing artist can reach beyond their direct friend and contact list, and into the consciousness of record companies, agents, and even established stars who might, even in some small way, mentor and support them.

Bad Press...Take It of Leave It (from BRASH! - A Music Marketing Blog)

“People gonna talk about you ’til the day you die; and there ain’t nothing you can do about it.” This is one of my favorite Madea movie quotes because this is true.  Especially in the entertainment industry where artists are constantly being watched, attacked, and ridiculed for making life’s mistakes or even for things that are blown out of the water by the press. A few artists escape the daily bashing by flying under the radar and keeping a simple private life.  While others feed on the bad press to stay relevant and/or capture attention towards their latest project.  But is exposure for your music REALLY worth the negative press?

Death of The Superstar: Fact or Fiction

Are we in the days of witnessing the death of the superstar? I think it’s a pretty decent argument, especially in this individualized society right now. Who’s to say who’s a superstar anymore? If I have a favorite artist, why can’t they be a superstar to me? Or should LMFAO be considered superstars because that dam song is everywhere. No really everywhere, I was at the Universoul Circus this morning and everybody was SHUFFLING.

Do we even need titles like that anymore? Why should I care if you’re a Grammy Award Winner? Honestly your first week sales don’t matter to me. I care about the music first, and it helps if you have an interesting personality, because then I have more reasons to connect with you….artists. Sure we still have the Beyonces and Gagas and Springsteins of the world…wait…do you need to be signed to a major label to be considered a superstar? I’m getting confused for no dam reason and I believe more people will be feeling the same. As the options grow for me to discover and choose who I want to listen to, I will decide based on ME, not a title, award, or ad spot. I don’t need, moreover, I do not want “the machine” trying to force me to I understand that the next great source of income for “superstars” became brand partnerships, but it’s not cool when its overload. And that’s what it has been….overload after overload after overload. In the end I believe people will be more turned off than to those “superstars”, along with future “appointed superstars”, and the “superstar” creators will have yet another issue at hand on why they are failing.

Leadership

As a leader it is important for me to bring my A game for the team 24/7. Informed decisions, keeping the team motivated by sharing new insights in the industry, and being the person they want to be someday makes a great leader. It comes from within, but can be learned.

A good leader has to not only do what they say but keep up on their toes. It is important for me, and any leader, to wake up early and start the day in the am, 6am for me, what about you? I get more work done, and a jump on the industry with the extra time in the day.

Anytime I have a meeting I dress the part, and prepare myself accordingly to bring my A game. Doing research on the client, and digging deeper into the industry on a particular topic sets me apart. I strive myself on being professional, and always on top of my game.

Knowing how to conduct myself around a client is paramount in the music industry. People in the Hip Hop world, for instance, never change a thing about themselves for anyone. It can be a tool for branding themselves, but does hold them back when trying to get further in their career. Sagging pants, talking in e-mails like they would if I were a homey, and not being respectful really hurts their career. An opportunity to communicate with a high level executive does not happen everyday. Give respect to another person on there level, not yours.

Measuring Fan Interaction Methods: A Case Study

Everyone has that band or artist, the one that initiated you into the fan relationship. Your every musical thought was directly related to the music, which spoke to you more than anybody else out there. They got you like no one ever had or ever would. It was a case of music speaking for itself and generating the emotional connection that music has always elicited from fans.

With the rise of technology, the interaction between that of fan and their favorite band or artist has changed dramatically. The messages of mega stars once conveyed by their record label or by their publicist are now coming directly from the band or artist. The middleman has effectively (in most cases) been eliminated. As such this has freed up the realm of how bands or artists communicate with their fans.

This new freedom has allowed many ways for band and artists to communicate and interact with their fans. Some efforts have been blissfully successful and others have been dismal. Certain factors that used to be set by the sales people at record labels have now been set up as “pay as you go” or “pay as much as you can afford” effectively changing price points forever.

Record Production is Like Baking a Cake: The Hierarchy of Reaching Full Potential [GRAPHIC]

So what does baking a cake have to do with record production? It’s a helpful analogy that will help you plan how much time, effort, and expenses to devote to the different aspects of record production. Before proceeding to the next step, always be completely happy with the current phase. Continuing the process after the fact will limit your full potential as many issues cannot be corrected at a later stage.

Bad Gig? Now What?

Sometimes you have a bad night. Your guitar was out of tune, you forgot the lyrics, you missed cues, and your head was just somewhere else. It happens in music, it happens in sports, it happens in life. But it’s what you do about it that separates the winners from the losers!

Mixing on headphones

For many musicians, producers and engineers mixing at home can bring up some limitations for music making. It may not always be possible to utilize loudspeakers for one reason or another. A common reason would be working in a flat or other domestic situation where disturbing ones neighbours is a distinct possibility. This text is about mixing on headphones. Mixing on headphones is from the outset a compromise situation although these days many people will in fact be listening to music with a pair of ear buds so it is certainly an important aspect of audio reproduction to be aware of.

For people who have to start mixing on headphones the first thing to be aware of is hearing damage. Make sure you do not listen for too long periods of time at loud volumes. The ear quickly adapts to loud listening volumes and it should be avoided at all costs it is especially important when mixing on headphones. It can be easy to not realize how loud you are listening and I suggest that you listen no louder that you need to in order to hear the balance requirements in your music. Closed back headphones can assist in attenuating some of the external sounds if need be so you can listen less loudly, though they do tend to be less comfortable over longer periods of time. When it comes to headphones you should be expecting to pay between £50.00 and £100.00 for a good quality set. If you peruse the quality manufacturers sites you will come up with a few options. Personally I like open back headphones for mixing in a quiet environment because there is some airflow to the ears and they tend to be more comfortable for longer.

5 Ways to Get More Gigs

I’ve written about how to find gigs numerous times on The Musician’s Guide, but in the past I’ve often focused on how to understand how promoters think and reverse engineering that process to get a higher success rate when contacting promoters. In this post I want to take a step back and share a few ideas on where you can find the opportunities to perform gigs.

Viacom Takes Another Stab With Artists.MTV

So Viacom Buys Myspace for $500+ billion and pawns it for $35 million…

Turns MTV into a reality pop network. What’s up Snookie, 16 and Pregnant and Jersey Shore?  Need I say more?

Buy’s B.E.T. and kills off my favorite show, Rap City. The only video show remaining is the “black” version of TRL: 106 and Park.

Now It wants to create another version of Myspace with Artists.MTV.
