Missing! Women in the music industry!

Don’t be fooled by the success of big names like Billie Eilish, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Women are not the majority. There is a drastic difference in both the representation and the portrayal of women in the music industry, compared to their males counterparts.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme was #ChooseToChallenge, as from challenge  comes change. In the spirit of this, Identity Music hosted a social media women’s week, dedicated to celebrating some of the amazing female talent we are fortunate enough to work with. Now, we want to raise awareness against the bias that lies within the industry. 

Before we continue, we should stress that we have no doubts about there being amazing male talents within the music industry. At no point does tackling such an important issue call that into question. Here at Identity Music, we work with a variety of artists across all demographics. We believe that talent and creativity are all that matters and that every musician should be afforded the same opportunities.

Evolution Of Female Musicians

In November 2019, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveiled its list of nominees for induction in 2020. Per usual, the nominee list is a predominantly male showcase — of the 16 nominees, only three are women. Further, one of those women is Chaka Khan, who is up for nomination not as a solo artist but as part of Rufus, the group with which she initially found fame.

Yet her solo career has far eclipsed the popularity of Rufus, a Chicago-based funk ensemble that disbanded in 1983. An active musician since 1970, Khan has sold approximately 70 million records and won 10 Grammy awards. So why isn’t she already in the Rock Hall, or at least up for nomination as a solo artist?

Top 10 Online Resources For Female Musicians

Since 2007, I have been a champion for female musicians. It all started a bit by accident. Back in 2000, I had created a hobby online radio station on Live365 called Women of Substance, a personal playlist of female artists, mostly indies, that I used as a personal way to listen to the music I enjoyed at work.

In 2007, I was a touring indie artist myself and looking to get more exposure. I was so frustrated by the lack of coverage for female musicians on terrestrial and satellite radio that I decided to take matters into my own hands. I turned that hobby playlist into a fledgling online radio station, and started adding new artists and promoting it everywhere I could.

An Open Letter To Jimmy Iovine

I respect your career. I often list you as a role model even though we’ve never met.

That is why it hurts me to know that you think that I am busy chatting about boys and wishing one of them would put together a soundtrack for those conversations.

That is why it hurts me to think that you put women in a music-less box where you have to hand deliver their next favorite song.
