“Music discovery services are now trying to suggest new bands and new music to listeners, but what is happening is that users are blasted with recommendations that are offering ‘more of the same” says Elias, the founder of EARs. “What we are trying to do is provide users with a service of making their own music selection’s, based on their own taste”.

Is It Time To Save Music?

In an article recently published by Paul Resnikoff, he wraps up the facts that detail all the problems that are killing the music business, the industry the artists, and eventually music as the form of art that we all love.

This is so depressing to read, yet so true, that the earlier we deal with, the better.
Paul’s article had me inspired to take action and write this in response.
We have to do our best to save music!

The Music Industry Must Innovate To Tackle Secondary Ticketing Rip-Offs

This article looks at the need for innovation to tackle the issue of fans being ripped off when they buy gig tickets. “As an industry we need to be innovative and tackle the issue head on to support genuine music fans and make it easier for them to get hold of the tickets that they want when they go on sale and at a reasonable cost to them.”

How Big Is The Music Business, Really?

Despite music being more accessible than ever before, feelings of unfair treatment and unfair compensation are rampant among musicians at all levels. Although Spotify takes the brunt of the blame, there are a lot of factors at play (the jury is split on the effects of piracy) and this isn’t the first time musicians have felt unfairly compensated for their music.

How A Visual Artist Taught Me To Earn A Living Through Licensing

Many musical artists don’t think about how to generate alternative revenue streams to supplement the money they make selling albums and playing gigs. Many artists avoid thinking about the business aspects of the industry in a more broad way than simply “play a gig and get paid”. This is a subject that has interested me for many years, as the financial roller coaster of being a professional musician can be very trying at times. When I was younger and working as a full time keyboard player, I could be playing in a big Broadway or Off-Broadway show one day, and the next be just another unemployed musician scrambling to earn a living after the show closed. But then I met Larry Rivers, the man who taught me how to merge art and commerce to generate revenue. My experiences with him have greatly influenced how I approach earning a living as a creative artist.

The Music Industry Won’t Always Be Like This

No one is listening to you at showcases. People prefer your memes to your songs on social media. People don’t understand your solo sections.

Any of these relate to you?
If they do you may be having doubts about your abilities? Maybe you don’t think your music is good enough? Maybe you just want to jack the whole thing in.

Jason K Ventura’s Music Industry Predictions For 2016

  • The streaming business model will change across the board. The new models will have fairground for artists and labels alike.
  • Due to royalty rates and a rebellion of artists, streaming services will be forced to put limitations on music catalogs.
  • With prices at an all time low and stagnant music sales, touring will continue to be a cash cow for the music industry. Yet again, touring will be the bread winner this year.

Where Does The Music Industry Stand?

Now that the last month of the year is upon us, I’m reflecting on the status of the music industry. In 2015 we as an industry have not made much progress in the terms of growth in sales or the development of new technology. The music industry has a hard time knowing the power of its brand. Labels have too many flops and not enough hits, releasing based on volume instead of quality.

Ten Music Biz Predictions, Hopes & Dreams for 2016

    1 Return of Real Songs

Millennials will come out of their collective fog and realize that what passes for pop music these days – well-produced, pleasant, beat-driven, formula, lyrically repetitive, singsongy, non-melodic music – are not really songs. Real songs – narrative stories with beginnings, middles and ends (as well as the clever bridges) - will stage a comeback, and real songwriters and performers will breathe a collective sigh of relief.

    Fair Play Fair Pay

2015 brought us many new technologies, but still our licensing system is clearly failing us. There is nothing protecting artists from digital, satellite, and AM/FM play. There is nothing set in place in the US to fairly compensate artists and musicians regarding fair play fair pay. The laws that pertain to royalty payments are unreliable and unfair. These laws need to be reevaluated. Terrestrial radio does not pay anything to artists and musicians, while cable and satellite were grandfathered in paying below the free market. Digital services, especially Pandora, have argued that music recorded prior to February 15, 1972 does not have to be legally paid. How is this fair to artists and musicians?

Millennial's Relationship To Music Consumption, By A Millenial

After reading Pierre Priot’s impressions on the relationship my generation has to music consumption (published here few days ago) I felt that, as a Millennial myself I should share my personal view on the matter. Although I can only relate to the European market, and from my own environment, I hope my thoughts will give you more insights into my generation’s mind.

    Nielsen's Music 360 Report

By Spencer Ritchie from Berklee’s Music Business Journal, thembj.org.

Nielsen recently published its annual Music 360 Report, detailing consumer spending in music, especially subscription services. According to Nielsen, the appetite for music in the United States is high. Apparently, 91% of the US population is listening up to 24 hours of music a week, a much larger number than reported for similar surveys in the 1990s.
