How To Earn The Most Money As An Independent Musician

As an independent musician, a lot of the time you’re making music for the passion; you love what you do and it loves you. But there comes the time when you need to ask yourself “how am I going to make a living out of this?”

Which is what we thought here at Ditto Music – so we opened the vaults of our data and studied well over 100k releases and found out how an independent musician can make the most money from their release.
There were quite a few interesting data points we found:
• iTunes is the runaway leader in royalty generation for artists - it outperforms all its competitors in every genre and remains the main store when it comes to music sales.
• Soundtrack is the highest grossing genre of music by a long way, bringing in 58% more than average for a release.
• With the debate over Spotify’s royalty distribution in the news, it’s interesting to see that the store pays out far below the average when compared to its rivals.
• Hip-Hop’s popularity over the last few years has seen its stock rise significantly, with a Hip-Hop artist looking to net themselves 11% more than average per release.
We’ve picked through all the data and presented it in a much easier to digest manner, analysing which store is best for your genre, along with how much each genre makes on average.

Sell Your Music (with No Competition) - CustomComposing.com

My name is Aaron Billings. I am also known as the Custom Music Guy.
I have created a revolutionary website and system that helps composers turn their dream of creating music for a living into a reality.
In fact, I ran some numbers about how likely it is for one composer’s work to be chosen when a music sale is made. And these are the results that I found:

Don’t Give Your Music Away Online – Ask for Something!

You can still make money from selling your music. It just takes more creativity nowadays.

Believe it or not, you can still make money from your music. It just takes a little more creativity then it used to. We’ve dug deep and what follows are our best ideas.

Before you begin raking in the dough, you need a couple of things first. One is your own website. Why? Because you have no control over those aggregators like ReverbNation, BandCamp, CDbaby, etc. Now we like BandCamp and believe it’s the best aggregator, but it’s not your home-base. The thing is,what happens to someone who might really dig one of your songs, but then gets side-tracked by another band on BandCamp? You’ve probably lost them forever. You won’t lose them in the awesomeness of your musical home! I’m a huge proponent of WordPress.org – some of the most usable sites on the web are run by WordPress.org.

Pitching Your Band

If you were presented with the opportunity to pitch your band directly to the Chief A&R representative for Capital Records, what would you say? If there was a venture capitalist looking to invest into the dreams of one band, how would you convince them to choose you? If your favorite band was in town and looking for an opener, what would you tell the promoter about your act?

Being able to pitch your band is one of the most important steps in being able to book shows, secure sponsorships, get a booking agent/manager, receive press, and even to getting on a label. It’s also one of the areas that I see independent musicians struggling with the most. Even though I have a disclaimer on LastStopBooking.com that we are not accepting submissions, I still receive about 50-100 EPK submissions and query letters per week. 90% of these sound the same: the band describes themselves as having “great music,” and they almost always say they are different than other artists because they are “hardworking.”

Who are the Highest Earning Musicians in the UK & US and How Do They Impact the Economy?

A few days ago I wrote a post over on Canpages about how Justin Bieber, Drake, and Chris Brown represent a whopping 7% of Canada’s whole music economy, which as a figure is a staggering $107,000,000 a year. I thought it would also be quite interesting to look at who has the biggest impact on the music economy here in the United Kingdom and in the United States.

The UK is home to three of the current highest earning artists in the world: U2, Elton John, and Paul McCartney, who collectively earn a massive $362,000,000 a year (it slightly dwarfs Justin Bieber’s $53,000,000!)

Share And Earn

Today, thinking about ways of selling content online, especially music, demands to take a close look at even distribution channels you didn’t bother to think of before.

You simply can’t afford to miss any options for sales any more. As album sales still drop and single downloads do not compensate for the loss of physical sales diversification of revenues is gaining more and more relevance.

The crux of diversification is that new revenue models must not cannibalize existing products.

So let’s think of revenue channels that do not concern physical media or downloads but opening revenues without loosing channels you already have.
